▸ Source high-resolution archival images across all required categories (maps, photographs, portraits, EIC material, newspaper clippings, and family documents)
▸ Establish formal contact with all required archives and image libraries, including the British Library (IOR collections), National Maritime Museum, V&A, David Rumsey Map Collection, Alkazi Collection, Library of Congress, and all relevant South Asian and Gulf archives
▸ Submit written requests to archives specifying book title, publisher, print run, territories, and digital edition plans, and track all responses
▸ Verify and document the full provenance of every image: archive name, reference number, copyright holder, licence type, and usage rights
▸ Manage rights clearance for all images, obtaining written permission before any asset is placed in the layout
▸ Prioritise public-domain material (pre-1928 or government documents in public domain in their country of origin) where quality equivalents exist
▸ Coordinate with the author to gain access to private Kuwaiti merchant family photograph collections, and obtain written permissions from family representatives
▸ Ensure all delivered assets meet the project's non-negotiable technical specifications: minimum 300 dpi at final print size, TIFF or high-quality JPEG, CMYK for colour, 600 dpi for document scans
▸ Maintain the master image log (Excel or CSV) recording: filename, caption, archive source, archive reference number, copyright holder, licence type, and usage rights
▸ Deliver all assets in a structured folder system organised by chapter and asset type
▸ Liaise with the book designer throughout the layout process to supply replacement images when required
▸ Minimum 5 years of experience as a picture researcher or visual researcher on illustrated books, documentary films, or museum publications
▸ Proven experience navigating major international archives, including the British Library IOR collections — applications from candidates without direct IOR experience will not be considered
▸ Strong understanding of copyright, fair use, public domain rules, and rights clearance processes across multiple jurisdictions (UK, India, Kuwait, USA)
▸ Experience sourcing material from South Asian or Indian Ocean history collections
▸ Meticulous documentation habits and experience maintaining master image logs for large publishing projects
▸ Ability to commission and supervise high-resolution scanning of documents held in private family collections
▸ Proficiency in written English; written Arabic an advantage
▸ Ability to work independently across multiple time zones and archive systems simultaneously
